Welcome to Basic Chemistry

There are two courses to consider here.

First there is Chemistry 101, Introduction to Chemistry, which is for students who do not need to go on to General Chemistry. There is some math in this course, and we will be responsible for some computer work.

Secondly there is Chemistry 107, Foundations of College Chemistry. Chemistry 107 includes more math and we will be responsible for some computer work. be responsible for some computer work.

Both of these classes are student centered physical science courses. Chemistry 107 is designed to prepare students to take General Chemistry. We will be using computer automation to help us match Learning Styles with the greatest number of students. This course is a combination of a Constructivist learning theory approach combined with Gardner's Multiple Intelligences. These courses are designed with particular interest toward adult learners. be responsible for some computer work.

Are chemistry courses easy? It depends on your preparation in Chemistry, basic Mathematics, and other science courses. We use dimensional analysis, and you will need a calculator that does exponents and Log functions. We will also be doing Calibrated Peer Review assignments on the Molecular Science Project server at UCLA. We also use publisher websites like the one at Prentice Hall. In both of these chemistry classes we will be using our own websites. be responsible for some computer work.

Lectures use power point presentations and student participation is expected. There are Labs and Lab write-up's No open toed shoes are allowed in Labs. All students are expected to wear safety glasses in Lab. be responsible for some computer work.
