Math 15 Prealgebra

Prealgebra textbook

Course Description

This course is designed for students who are planning to study algebra and need a review of the basic skills of arithmetic and an introduction to the basic principles of algebra.

Pre-requisite

Math 10 or Basic Math, with a grade of “C” or better.  Students must meet the prerequisite—no exceptions! Beyond the official prerequisite, knowing your multiplication facts (times tables) is crucial. You have very little chance of succeeding if you do not know the multiplcation facts up to the 12's. Let me know ASAP if you have any weakness in the multiplication facts.

Go to the Coolmath website to practice your multiplication facts for youself or someone you know who needs help.

Textbooks

Prealgebra (5th ed.) by K. Elayn Martin-Gay with MyMathLab(This is the where the online assignments will be taking place).  MyMathLab should come free with new textbooks purchased at the Cypress College Bookstore. The cost for a new textbook at the bookstore is $149.35 as of 8/5/2009. If you buy a used book, you will have to purchase an access code for MyMathLab separately, which as of 8/5/2009 costs $76.05 from the Cypress College Bookstore, or $70 from the MyMathLab web site (To do this, you will need the student access code: hamman10319). It is cheaper overall to buy a new textbook as opposed to a used book plus the access code.

One option to keep costs down would be to purchase only the access code. Once you are logged into MyMathLab, you have access to the textbook online.

In order to be successful in this class, the MyMathLab access code must be purchased and activated by the end of Week 2 (our first exam is on Thursday, September 10, 2009)!

If you will be unable to obtain the MyMathLab access code by this time, please see me as soon as possible.

SI (Supplemental Instruction)

IMPROVE YOUR GRADE! Supplemental Instruction(SI) classes are the same as any other sections except that they offer students the opportunity to participate in study groups and to get FREE individualized tutoring. Studies show that students who participate in these study groups earn a half to a full grade higher in these classes than the students who do not participate. So take advantage of this wonderful opportunity. Be sure to include study group times in your fall schedule. Attendance in these study groups is optional. START STRONG, STAY STRONG!!
